Los separadores de pliegues hacen posible la clasificación de mezclas de materiales sólidos con granulometría heterogénea. La mezcla heterogénea de sólidos a separar se alimenta con la tolva de alimentación. Por una canaleta vibratoria se hace llegar la mezcla al canal quebrado del separados a una altura media. En el canal vertical se mueve un flujo de aire en sentido ascendente. Conforme a la geometría y densidad, las partículas, son arrastradas por el flujo de aire o bien se depositan por efecto de la fuerza de la gravedad. En cada pliegue del canal, la mezcla de materiales sólidos atraviesa el flujo de aire y cae sobre la cara opuesta del separador. El efecto es equivalente a un escalón de separación. Debido a las condiciones de flujo, se forma una turbulencia con forma de hélice cilíndrica de turbulencia entre dos pliegues consecutivos del canal quebrado. Esta hélice se encarga de que las partículas sólidas se muevan en dirección aproximadamente perpendicular a la dirección del flujo de aire. De este modo, en cada pliegue tiene lugar una separación en flujos cruzados. Con un conjunto de varias de estas etapas consecutivas, se consiguen separaciones muy finas. CE 275 está equipado con un canal quebrado de 20 escalones. El material transparente permite observar fácilmente los procesos en el canal.
Un soplante genera el flujo de aire necesario. El caudal volumétrico de aire y el caudal másico de sólidos se pueden regular. El material fino venteado hacia arriba por el flujo de aire se separa con un ciclón. Puntos de medición de presión situados en posiciones relevantes del banco de ensayos permiten determinar las pérdidas de presión.
Como material alimentado se recomienda carbón activo con diferentes tamaños de partícula. Para el análisis granulométrico del material alimentado, del material grueso y del material fino recomendamos utilizar una balanza analítica y una tamizadora mecánica (CE 264).
