Los engranajes de tornillo sin fin son un tipo de engranajes de rodadura helicoidal y se enmarcan dentro de los elementos de transmisión y transformación. Este tipo de engranajes se compone de un tornillo sin fin que actúa habitualmente como impulsor y de una rueda helicoidal impulsada. Los engranajes de tornillo sin fin tienen un reducido nivel de ruido y una marcha amortiguada, y, con el mismo rendimiento y transmisiones, son más pequeños y ligeros de realizar que los engranajes rectos o los engranajes cónicos.
El equipo de ensayo TM 124 permite estudiar el rendimiento y los momentos en un engranaje. También permite calcular la relación de transmisión del engranaje. El alumno aprende de forma sencilla los conceptos básicos del engrane: número de dientes y pasos de rosca, módulo, radio primitivo y distancia entre ejes.
La rueda helicoidal y el tornillo sin fin se montan sobre rodamientos de bolas. Las fuerzas se generan por medio de juegos de pesos y se pueden variar de manera rápida y sencilla.
