En la práctica se utilizan, según los requisitos, diferentes tipos de cambiadores de calor para garantizar una transferencia de calor eficiente y evitar pérdidas.
Con el banco de ensayo WL 315C se estudian y comparan cinco diferentes cambiadores de calor. Asimismo se demuestra el funcionamiento tanto con flujo paralelo como con flujo a contracorriente con sus diferentes curvas de temperatura.
En los cambiadores de calor de placas, de tubos concéntricos y de carcasa y tubos, la transferencia de calor entre agua caliente y fría se produce dentro de tubos y/o placas. En el cambiador de calor de tubos de aletas, el aire fluye en flujo cruzado alrededor de tubos que contienen agua caliente.
En el depósito de agitación con doble camisa y serpentín, el agua caliente puede fluir o bien a través de la camisa exterior o bien a través del serpentín interior. Un mecanismo de agitación se encarga de mezclar el agua dentro del depósito para lograr una distribución de calor homogénea.
El caudal volumétrico de aire para el estudio del cambiador de calor de tubos de aletas se ajusta mediante una válvula de mariposa en la salida del soplante. El cambio entre el modo de flujo paralelo y el modo de flujo a contracorriente se efectúa por medio de válvulas. El caudal en el circuito de agua caliente y/o de agua fría también se ajusta por medio de válvulas.
El caudal volumétrico de aire se mide con un sensor de presión diferencial instalado fijamente. La presión del agua se puede medir con un sensor de presión diferencial móvil en diferentes puntos. Además se miden temperaturas y caudales. Los valores de medición se leen en indicadores digitales y se pueden transferir al mismo tiempo directamente a un ordenador vía puerto USB para su posterior evaluación con ayuda del software suministrado.
El suministro de agua caliente fría se realiza o bien en el laboratorio o bien con ayuda de los accesorios WL 312.10 Generador de agua caliente y WL 312.11 Generador de agua fría.
